Advertising is the main revenue source for many online businesses. In fact, many online businesses just simply could not make it without their Adsense revenues. This is especially true for free services online, where the user is never asked to buy anything making there be no other income source for the site. Google’s new feature allows visitors of Web sites who display ads generated by Adsense, to turn off the viewing of all ads for up to 24 hours. Many shortsighted individuals see this as a problem, while others see it as a great step toward targeted advertising. There are a few arguments to be made in both directions. The root of the question is:
Would They Be Clicking the Ads Anyway?
Would users who choose to hide the ads be clicking them anyway? That is the question at hand. Generally speaking, most individuals who choose to hide their ads probably aren’t looking to purchase anything, anyway. But isn’t that the purpose of the Adsense program? To display ads to individuals while they are viewing a subject that they are interested in? These ads are usually not meant for individuals who are specifically searching for a product, and instead are intended for individuals who are reading about a certain subject and may be persuaded to buy a related product.
At the same time, giving the user the ability to hide the ads makes them that much more targeted. Users who don’t choose to hide ads may be more likely to find them helpful, and therefore purchase a product that is being advertised. But will this small demographic be enough to make the hide-ads program worthwhile for publishers, advertisers, and Google? Remember, Google is going to take a hit from this as well. They earn the majority of the amount paid per click, while the publishers only earns a fraction.
The subject is a two-headed coin, that is likely to be debated fervently until the outcome is clearer. Of course, the option is still left up to the publisher, and this feature is bound to benefit certain types of Web sites more than others. For instance, sites selling products, or offering products to users, as well as a fair amount of content may elect to turn off the hide-ads feature in order not to scare away their users that are not interested in their product, but instead interested in reading their content.
